There has been a lot of stigma attached to this novel and to the reader who dares to pick up the novel and read it in public. The book revolves around two main protagonists; Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, fighting the battle of love. Anastasia is portrayed as a young college girl who comes off as very shy. Whereas, Christian is a well-known 27 year old business man, who is widely respected by many in society. The two lock eyes unexpectedly and like most books, end up falling in love with a slight twist. Anastasia, who met Christian by chance, was immediately head over heels for him. However, Christian had a side to him that no one knew about; a dominant side. After realizing that he was interested in Ana on a more sexual level he expresses his feelings to her. Christian states his intentions and introduces her to his fetishes and to a new lifestyle altogether. Ana agrees to his SM lifestyle with consent after losing her virginity to him. Christian being a businessman never mixes business with pleasure, resulting in him keeping non-exclusive relationships that are confidential and which allows him to be the dominant figure without fearing the consequences it entails. In modern day culture this is commonly referred to as â€Å"no strings attached†, â€Å"friends with benefits†, â€Å"a random hookup, and â€Å"non-exclusive†. Basically they would sleep together, but there were no feelings involved, but this only held true for Christian. The novel plays on tension over the nature of their relationship and the possibility of romance and love as well as Anas sexual explorations. The audience’s reactions to this book were surprisingly endless. Many were disgusted, angry, flabbergasted, and even went to the extent of burning the book. Without a doubt, this book pushes several boundaries and had many talking for days. The obvious stereotyping of men vs. women displayed in the book made people believe that the author was taking feminism backwards instead of helping to break the cycle of violence women endured in the past. Many truly believe that we are in post feminism right now, but are we really? The author seemed to be reinforcing the stereotypes that women thought were long gone. A clear patriarchy can be viewed from their relationship as the womens interests are subordinated to those of men. It views women in a way that devalues them. Anastasia has only been with one man sexually. This is seen as a remarkable fact as many women today are not exactly virgins at first meet. We see that Anastasia looks at sex in a more positive light when she refers to it as making love whereas Christian refers to it has f***ing. The author seems to continuously reinforce false stereotypes against women as it is clear that the sexual object or sexual subject is Anastasia. She is identified as a sexual conquest to be persuaded and lusted over. Her only weakness was showing emotion of love for the man of her dreams. Christian is identified as the dominator, sexual subjectivity, in charge of the sexual encounter and his strength is not showing his emotion. Human emotion is a powerful concept because when emotion takes over, you have no control over how you feel and the outcome that follows. It was appalling to find out that the author was a woman because it made me question how a woman could write a book against the empowerment of women. Erika was a very shy individual; like Anastasia as she portrayed herself in documentaries and interviews that were conducted about her wild fantasies. One passage that illustrates my point perfectly is the beautiful description of the river captures in beautifully graphic detail. I believe this is what he wanted to show the world. The Bridge at Argenteuil is a study in the wonders of nature and how man and nature can exist in harmony. Sisley painted in great detail, showing the perfection that exists in nature. For example, Sisley included different shades of blue in the river; the further I looked into the background at the water, the whiter it seemed to become. The white clouds seem to be moving from right to left, slowly covering a light blue sky. Sisley added these details to capture the ever-changing essence of nature. The work is insightful. This painting made me take a slower, second look at nature and how everything does balance out. For example, in this painting, every aspect of nature the sky, the water, and the land seem to have an equal part of the frame, they seem to be balanced. I could envision a triangle while looking at these aspects, with the sky being the top point, and the land and water being the bottom points. The Bridge at Argenteuil resists monotony because nature is always changing. For instance, the water seems clear, like it would be during the summer, but the grass is becoming brown, indicating that the season is moving toward winter. The sky is becoming overcast; this could be indicative of a colder breeze moving in. Because of these elements, it seems as though the season is in transition. This painting has and has not withstood the test of time. For instance, it has withstood the test of time because it was painted in 1872 and is still on display along with other famous and important works of art. It depicts a nature scene that is always changing and evolving, a scene that never becomes outdated. However, Alfred Sisley, as well as this painting, has not been studied extensively and is rarely analyzed, unlike other works of art of the late nineteenth century, such as Monet and Renoir. This gives the impression that this painting has not withstood the test of time. The bridge at Argenteuil has not only been painted by Alfred Sisley. This painting possesses not only international appeal because Sisley was a French painter, but universal appeal because people from around the world can relate to nature. This painting depicts elements in nature that can be found in any rural area. For example, it is a scene that focuses on a grassy knoll and a body of water. While looking at this painting, it seems as though it can be found in the United States, when actually, this scene was painted in France.
